How to use a palette in a build
- Main block: use the block you picked for most of the walls.
- Second block: use it for corners, pillars and the edges of windows.
- Third block: use it for the roof or the floor.
- The rest: mix them in here and there to add texture.
Ready to build? Try a round tower, a striped lighthouse, a dome or a smooth block gradient.
Palette questions
What is a block palette in Minecraft?
A block palette is a small set of blocks that you use together in one build, for example a wall block, a trim block and a roof block. Builders use 3 to 6 blocks with colours that go well together so the build looks planned instead of random.
How does the palette generator pick blocks?
It works out the ideal colours around your block (a bit lighter, a bit darker, a little warmer or cooler) and then picks the block whose colour is closest to each one, without using a block twice. Colours are compared in a colour space where equal steps look equally different. With Oak Planks the similar palette is Oak Planks, Birch Planks, Packed Mud, Stripped Birch Log and Stripped Spruce Log.
What do Similar, Contrast and Light to dark mean?
Similar keeps close to your block, good for walls with texture. Contrast adds blocks of the opposite colour for trim, doors and roofs. Light to dark is one colour from dark to light, good for gradients, floors and fading walls.
What are good warm block palettes?
The warm theme picks Acacia Planks, Raw Gold Block, Stripped Mangrove Log, Orange Wool and End Stone. Try the desert theme for sand and clay colours, or fire cave for deep reds.
Can I use only survival blocks?
Yes. "Survival blocks only" is on by default, and so are "No falling blocks" (no sand, gravel or concrete powder) and "Building blocks only", which leaves out lamps, machines and odd blocks. With all three on there are 170 blocks to choose from. Every block in the list is a full cube.
How do I find a block of a certain colour?
Use "Find blocks by colour" under the palette: pick any colour and you get the 8 blocks closest to it. The lists further down show every block by colour family.
