Minecraft build ideas: what to build first
Not sure what to build in Minecraft? Start small: an igloo takes 279 snow blocks and about 14–28 minutes by hand. Next, try a round tower (391 blocks) in survival, or a floating tiny planet (497 blocks) in Creative. Every idea below has its exact block count from our shape engine, a build time and a layer-by-layer guide.

Easy build ideas for beginners
Small builds with few kinds of blocks. Good first builds, and done in one go.
Fountain
A round pool with a tall water spout. Small and round, with a water bucket at the end. In survival you can swap the quartz for stone.
Build time: about 9–17 minutes
Start buildingIgloo
A snow dome with a way in. Only 1 kind of block, and a shovel gets snow fast.
Build time: about 14–28 minutes
Start buildingSurvival build ideas
Built from blocks you collect anyway: stone, wood and snow. No rare blocks needed.
Christmas house
A snowy wooden cabin with a chimney. Spruce wood, snow and bricks: all easy to find in a snowy place.
Build time: about 13–25 minutes
Start buildingGraveyard
A little spooky yard with tombstones and a dead tree. Wood, stone, gravel and moss: easy to collect, and it is flat and low.
Build time: about 15–29 minutes
Start buildingWitch's hut
A round swamp hut on stilts with a witch-hat roof. Mangrove and spruce wood from the swamp and the forest, terracotta from badlands or a kiln.
Build time: about 16–31 minutes
Start buildingCastle gate
A stone wall with a round gate and battlements. Stone bricks and mossy stone bricks: easy to make from stone.

Start buildingRound tower
A stone tower with windows and a pointed roof. Stone bricks and deepslate tiles: blocks you mine anyway.
Build time: about 20–40 minutes
Start buildingHaunted house
A dark wooden house with broken windows and a porch. Dark oak, cobblestone and deepslate: blocks you find in a dark forest and underground.
Build time: about 26–51 minutes
Start buildingCreative build ideas
Bigger, floating or colourful builds. In Creative you can fly and have every block.
Hot-air balloon
A striped balloon with a basket. It floats high up and uses lots of wool, so Creative is easier.
Build time: about 25–49 minutes
Start buildingTiny planet
A little round world with a tree on top. It floats, so it is easiest in Creative where you can fly.
Build time: about 25–50 minutes
Start buildingLighthouse
Red and white stripes with a glowing top. Concrete, glass and sea lanterns are slow to collect, so Creative is easier.
Build time: about 31–62 minutes
Start buildingSpace station ball
A round station with a ring around it. A big floating ball and ring: best in Creative, where you can fly.
Build time: about 1–2 hours
Start buildingHow to build them, layer by layer
Big builds are easy when you build one flat layer at a time, from the ground up. Every build here is split into layers for you.
- Get the blocks. Each build page has a "What you need" list with stacks of 64.
- Find a flat spot a little bigger than the build.
- Build layer 1 on the ground. Press Start building: the guide shows the layer from above, with the next blocks in yellow.
- Go up one layer and repeat. Round shapes get smaller or bigger each layer, and the guide counts every block.
- Take breaks. Your progress stays on this device. Find it again in My builds.
Build times are a rough guess for building by hand: 10 to 20 blocks a minute.
