35 block circle in Minecraft (radius 17)

A 35-block-wide circle takes 96 blocks for a 1-block outline and 973 to fill it. Go around each quarter in runs of 9·3·2·1·1·1·1·1·2·3·9. The centre is a single block, because 35 is odd.

How to build it

  1. Mark the centre block. Count 17 blocks out from the centre block in all four directions and mark those four points.
  2. Place the four flat edges of 9. Centre each flat edge on one of the four points: 4 blocks either side of it.
  3. Fill each corner with 3·2·1·1·1·1·1·2·3. After each run, step one block diagonally inward and place the next run. Do the same in all four corners.
  4. Repeat for each layer. A straight wall is the same ring on every layer (a 5-high wall takes 480 blocks). A dome or sphere shrinks the ring as it goes up.
All 35 rows, north to south

Each row lists its runs of blocks from west to east; "2-2" means 2 blocks, a gap, then 2 blocks.

Questions

How many blocks is a 35 block circle?

96 blocks for a 1-block outline with diagonal steps, 136 for an outline with no diagonal gaps, and 973 for a filled disc.

Should I build 35 or 34?

35 is odd, so the circle has one centre block: doors, beacons and pillars line up with the middle. 34 has a 2×2 centre instead.

How many blocks for a 35 sphere or dome?

A hollow 35 block sphere with a 1-block shell takes 3,098 blocks; a hollow 35 dome (18 layers, open at the bottom) takes 1,569. Plan them layer by layer in the sphere generator or the dome generator.

Thin or thick outline?

A thin outline (96 blocks) steps diagonally, so mobs and water can slip through the corners. A thick outline (136 blocks) adds a block at every step, which makes a sealed wall.
