64 block circle in Minecraft

A 64-block-wide circle takes 180 blocks for a 1-block outline and 3,228 to fill it. Go around each quarter in runs of 12·4·2·3·1·2·1·2·1·1·1·2·1·2·1·3·2·4·12. The centre is a 2×2 square, because 64 is even.

How to build it

  1. Mark the 2×2 centre. Count 31 blocks out past the 2×2 centre in all four directions and mark those four points.
  2. Place the four flat edges of 12. Centre each flat edge on one of the four points: 6 blocks either side of the centre line.
  3. Fill each corner with 4·2·3·1·2·1·2·1·1·1·2·1·2·1·3·2·4. After each run, step one block diagonally inward and place the next run. Do the same in all four corners.
  4. Repeat for each layer. A straight wall is the same ring on every layer (a 5-high wall takes 900 blocks). A dome or sphere shrinks the ring as it goes up.
All 64 rows, north to south

Each row lists its runs of blocks from west to east; "2-2" means 2 blocks, a gap, then 2 blocks.

Questions

How many blocks is a 64 block circle?

180 blocks for a 1-block outline with diagonal steps, 252 for an outline with no diagonal gaps, and 3,228 for a filled disc.

Should I build 64 or 65?

64 is even, so the centre is a 2×2 square: good for a 2-wide door or a 2×2 pillar. 65 has a single centre block instead.

How many blocks for a 64 sphere or dome?

A hollow 64 block sphere with a 1-block shell takes 10,464 blocks; a hollow 64 dome (32 layers, open at the bottom) takes 5,232. Plan them layer by layer in the sphere generator or the dome generator.

Thin or thick outline?

A thin outline (180 blocks) steps diagonally, so mobs and water can slip through the corners. A thick outline (252 blocks) adds a block at every step, which makes a sealed wall.
