Minecraft pixel art generator image to blocks

Add any picture and get a block-by-block build plan: every pixel becomes the block with the closest colour, from 49 wool, concrete and terracotta colours or 198 survival-friendly blocks. Every pixel is one block, so a 64 × 64 picture is up to 4,096 blocks: the block count under the preview shows the exact number for your picture. You get a material list in stacks and shulker boxes, a zoomable grid to build from, and exports for Litematica (.litematic), WorldEdit (.schem) and Bedrock (.mcstructure, .mcfunction). After the picture turns into blocks, press Edit blocks to change any block with the pencil, eraser, fill or mirror.

How to make pixel art in Minecraft

Step by step (5 steps)
  1. Add a picture. Choose a file, drop it on the page, paste it or take a photo. Simple images with big shapes and strong outlines turn out best.
  2. Pick a size. 64 × 64 is a good survival project; 128 × 128 fills one map. Use Crop and drag the box to frame the part you want.
  3. Choose your blocks. Start with Colours (wool, concrete, terracotta). Turn on Only blocks I have to plan with what is in your chests.
  4. Tune the look. None gives flat areas that are easy to build; Smooth dithering mixes blocks for photos and gradients. Pick Wall or Floor: walls use each block's side colour, floors its top colour.
  5. Build it. Turn on Grid and zoom in (the thicker lines every 16 blocks match chunk borders), tap a block in the material list to see where it goes, or export a file and load it in your world.
Load the export in your world
  • .litematic (Java, Litematica mod): put the file in .minecraft/schematics, load it and place it; the mod shows a ghost of each block to build over.
  • .schem (Java, WorldEdit, Axiom, Amulet): put it in config/worldedit/schematics, then //schem load name and //paste.
  • .mcstructure (Bedrock): load it with a Structure Block (Import on Windows), or add it to a behaviour pack's structures folder and use /structure load.
  • .mcfunction (Java or Bedrock): add it to a datapack or behaviour pack and run it with /function. It places the art one block away from where you stand, and long builds are split into several files.

How many pixels is Minecraft pixel art?

In Minecraft pixel art, 1 pixel = 1 block. So the number of blocks is the width times the height, minus any empty (see-through) pixels. A Minecraft map shows an area of 128 × 128 blocks, so art the size of one map is 16,384 blocks. Each block's texture is 16 × 16 pixels, but in pixel art the whole block counts as one pixel.

The tool counts the blocks for you: the number under the preview (blocks, stacks and shulkers) changes as soon as you change the size, the crop or the blocks.

Pixel art grid: how to copy it

Press Grid on the preview to see every block as a square. Zoom in and count the squares in one row, then place the same blocks in the same order in your world. The thicker lines every 16 blocks match chunk borders (press F3 + G in Java to see them), so you always know where you are. Build one row at a time from the bottom of a wall, or from one edge of floor art.

Want something small to start? Our easy Minecraft pixel art ideas each come with a grid and a block list.

Java and Bedrock

Pixel art is the same in both editions: the same wool, concrete and terracotta colours. For Java, export a .litematic (Litematica mod) or .schem (WorldEdit). For Bedrock, export a .mcstructure for a structure block or a .mcfunction. Or skip the files and build by hand from the grid, which works everywhere, on phones and consoles too.

Blocks per pixel art size

Every pixel is one block. Shulker box = 27 stacks of 64 = 1,728 blocks.

Pixel art questions

How do I turn a picture into Minecraft pixel art?

Add your image above (choose, drop, paste or take a photo), pick a size such as 128 × 128, choose which blocks to use, and the generator matches every pixel to the block with the closest colour. Then follow the preview block by block, or export a .litematic or .schem file and load it with Litematica or WorldEdit so you only have to fill in the blocks.

What size should Minecraft pixel art be?

128 × 128 blocks fills exactly one map, which is the most popular size. 32 × 32 and 64 × 64 are good for survival builds. A standing wall can be at most 384 blocks tall in the Overworld (y −64 to 319), so very tall images work better as floor art.

Which blocks are best for pixel art?

Concrete has the brightest, flattest colours; wool is cheaper and easy to farm from sheep; terracotta adds muted earth tones. Together they give 49 colours, the default set here. "All" adds wood, stone and ore blocks (220 blocks in total), which helps photos. Avoid sand, gravel and concrete powder on walls because they fall; the "No falling blocks" switch removes them.

How many blocks do I need?

Width × height, minus any transparent pixels. A full 128 × 128 picture needs 16,384 blocks, which is 256 stacks or about 9.5 shulker boxes. The material list next to the preview counts every block type in blocks, stacks and shulker boxes.

Does it work for Bedrock Edition?

Yes. The .mcstructure and Bedrock .mcfunction exports use Bedrock block names and states (for example terracotta becomes hardened_clay and log directions become pillar_axis), so colours come out right in Bedrock worlds.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is read and converted in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server. Share links only contain the settings (size, blocks, dithering), never the picture.

Can I make map art with this?

You can build flat floor art at 128 × 128 and view it on a map, but maps use their own colour palette and shading. A dedicated map-art mode with staircasing for extra shades is planned next.

Block colours are our own measurements of each block's average face colour (Java 26.3). Bedrock names come from the open PrismarineJS minecraft-data tables.
