Minecraft spiral staircase generator step by step

Pick the well size and the height and get the staircase layer by layer: each layer is one step. A 3 × 3 spiral staircase 24 high takes 48 blocks, with 8 steps per turn and 7 blocks of headroom. Add a round wall for a tower, then build it or export it.

Spiral staircase sizes at a glance

Block counts for a 24 block climb. The steps per turn decide how steep it is and how much headroom you get.

How to use it

4 steps
  1. Set the well size (3 × 3 is the compact classic) and the step width; everything inside the steps is the centre pillar.
  2. Set the height in blocks. Each layer holds exactly one step, one block above the last.
  3. Step through the layers from the bottom: place the pillar and that layer's step. Use stair blocks facing the climb to walk up without jumping.
  4. Add a wall for a tower, then use build mode on your phone or export a schematic.

Questions builders ask

How do I make a spiral staircase in Minecraft?
Build a pillar in the middle and place one step per layer around it, each one block higher than the last. In a 3 × 3 well the 8 blocks around a 1-block pillar are the steps, so one full turn is 8 steps and climbing 24 blocks takes 48 blocks in total. Put a stair block on each step, facing the way you climb, so you can walk up without jumping.
Will I hit my head on the step above?
No. A step has the step one turn higher straight above it, 8 layers up in a 3 × 3 well, so there are 7 free blocks of headroom. You need 2. Wider wells have more steps per turn: 9 in a 5 × 5 well with 2-wide steps, 19 in a 9 × 9 well.
What size spiral staircase should I build?
3 × 3 is the compact classic (one step per block around a single pillar). 4 × 4 has a 2 × 2 pillar and 8 steps per turn. 5 × 5 with 2-wide steps (77 blocks for 24 high) is comfortable for a tower. Use 7 × 7 or more for a grand staircase.
Which way does it turn?
The generator climbs clockwise seen from above, starting on the east side. To turn the other way, build the layers in a mirror image, or rotate and mirror the schematic when you paste it.
Can I put a wall around it for a tower?
Yes, switch on "Round wall around it". The 5 × 5 staircase then gets a round wall and is 7 × 7 on the outside: 461 blocks for 24 high, wall included.
