17 block circle in Minecraft (radius 8)

A 17-block-wide circle takes 48 blocks for a 1-block outline and 225 to fill it. Go around each quarter in runs of 5·2·2·1·2·5. The centre is a single block, because 17 is odd.

Rule: a block counts when its centre lies inside the circle, the same grid the game uses. Checked 21 Oct 2026.

How to build it

  1. Mark the centre block. Count 8 blocks out from the centre block in all four directions and mark those four points.
  2. Place the four flat edges of 5. Centre each flat edge on one of the four points: 2 blocks either side of it.
  3. Fill each corner with 2·2·1·2. After each run, step one block diagonally inward and place the next run. Do the same in all four corners.
  4. Repeat for each layer. A straight wall is the same ring on every layer (a 5-high wall takes 240 blocks). A dome or sphere shrinks the ring as it goes up.

On this size one quarter has a square corner: the block where the line turns is counted once, in the run before the turn, which is why the pattern is not the same read backwards.

All 17 rows, north to south

Each row lists its runs of blocks from west to east; "2-2" means 2 blocks, a gap, then 2 blocks.

Questions

How many blocks is a 17 block circle?

48 blocks for a 1-block outline with diagonal steps, 64 for an outline with no diagonal gaps, and 225 for a filled disc.

Should I build 17 or 16?

17 is odd, so the circle has one centre block: doors, beacons and pillars line up with the middle. 16 has a 2×2 centre instead.

How many blocks for a 17 sphere or dome?

A hollow 17 block sphere with a 1-block shell takes 690 blocks; a hollow 17 dome (9 layers, open at the bottom) takes 365. Plan them layer by layer in the sphere generator or the dome generator.

Thin or thick outline?

A thin outline (48 blocks) steps diagonally, so mobs and water can slip through the corners. A thick outline (64 blocks) adds a block at every step, which makes a sealed wall.
